Say What You Mean and Mean What You Say is a book I authored featuring a collection of Appalachian sayings, euphemisms, similes, metaphors, and interesting expressions. I listened and collected these sayings for over thirty years before the book was published and have continued to hear funny and interesting sayings almost every day since.
I will share many of these on this website. I love the poetic way Appalachians choose to speak. As the Appalachian culture is becoming more and more homogenized into mainstream society, it seems even more important to preserve the language trends of our ancestors of the area before it fades completely. Television, music, videos, and movies have created a whole new language for the younger generations and they are quickly embracing these trends and forsaking the past language of the region.
